The lantern festival is celebrated fifteen days after Chinese New Year and marks the end of the celebration, it is sometimes referred to as little Chinese New Year. During the festival children parade thought the streets carrying lanterns. Originally only nobles could afford ornate and large lanterns today they are carried by nearly everyone. People who had the largest and brightest lanterns were believed to be rewarded with good luck in the upcoming year.
Originally the holiday was a holiday for unmarried people to go matchmaking. Curfews were removed and eligible citizens were chaperoned through the city in hopes of finding a suitor.
Today the festival is celebrated across the globe even in cities without a large Chinese population. One of the more popular festivities is the Lumiere Lantern Festival celebrated in Ontario Canada.
