The origins of cupid lie in Roman Mythology. Cupid is the son of Venus and Mercury and is the god of Love, Desire and Passion (in Greek Mythology he known is Eros). Psyche was daughter of a king, who beauty was so great people stopped worshipping and giving offering and sacrifice’s to Venus. This so enraged Venus she sent her mischievous son Cupid to punish Psyche and force her to fall in love with a low, contemptuous and unkind man. Cupid gathered two vases from his mother’s fountains, one from the fountain of sweet waters, and the other from bitter waters.
Cupid went off to her bedroom and found her sleeping. He then proceeded to pour drops of the bitter water onto her lips. When she shifted in her sleep cupid saw her full beauty and felt sorry for the punishment he had now inflicted on her. He then took one of his arrows and pricked her side. This caused Psyche to awaken from her sleep and stare directly at Cupid. Although he was invisible and unable to be seen, he was startled and accidentally pricked himself with his own arrow. He was now in love with Psyche and poured the sweet waters over her head to remove the damage he had just done.
She was now unable to love any other man. When her parents consulted the oracle of Apollo, and found out her fate was not to marry a mortal, and she should be brought to meet him on top of a neighboring mountaintop. While fearful she obeyed the oracle and was taken into Cupid’s magical place in the sky. Now being mortal she was forbidden from looking at Cupid. Cupid came to her only in the dark of night and left every morning at dawn before the sun rose so she was unable to see him.
Eventually the prodding of her sisters and her own curiosity got the better of her and she conceived a plan to gaze upon her husband. She took a lamp and concealed it under a heavy cloth until he fell asleep. She then cut the cloth open and gazed up on him. Cupid awaked at this and grew angered at her and left her. Psyche then wandered about trying to find her husband. Eventually she came to the Temple of Venus, and pleaded with her to help. Venus gave her a series of tasks to perform. The last of the tasks was to bring a box to the underworld without opening it. She was unable to resist the temptation and eventually opened the box, and immediately fell into death’s slumber.

Leprechauns are a type of mythical creature in traditional Irish folklore. A leprechaun is usually depicted as a small bearded man (no bigger than a child) who wears a green suit and a hat. They are known for engaging in activities of friskiness, are quite playful and sometimes tricky. According to folklore, leprechauns are extremely skilled in making shoes, as well as guarding treasures. They like to hide their valuables in pots and store them at the ends of rainbows. If captured by a human, a leprechaun must grant the human three wishes in order to be released. However, leprechauns tend to be quick, and they can instantly disappear if one doesn’t keep a close eye. Although they enjoy mischief, they are neither regarded as good nor evil. [Read more…]

Halloween is the day of the year that has the most parties thrown in its honor. Everyone loves to dress up and attend Halloween parties with their friends. Most people end up getting several invitations to different Halloween parties that are often on the same night. If you are planning to throw your own Halloween party, how can you get all your friends to head to your shindig and not someone else’s? You need to come up with some unique and fun ideas that will get everyone on your list so excited about your party they won’t even consider going anywhere else.
Not Just Any Old Theme
Many people don’t bother thinking of a theme for their Halloween party since it seems to be somewhat of a theme already. But rather than just putting up some Happy Halloween banners and fake cobwebs, why not come up with a great theme party idea? You can do anything from a haunted house or graveyard to a monster mash or horror movie bash. Once you’ve chosen your theme apply it to everything from your invitations to your party food. Guests will love some guidance on what to dress up as, especially if you do something a little different.
Your Halloween party invitations are one of the most important aspects of your party. Invitations are the best way to get your guests excited about your party. Many people don’t even send invitations anymore so even sending out simple ones will help your party stick in people’s minds. Be sure to apply your party theme to your invitations. If you can’t find any invitations at your local party store that go with your theme you can always use invitation templates that you can download for free from the Internet.
You can totally customize invitation templates and add colorful pictures as well. Guests will love to receive these fun invitations in the mail. You should send your invitations out approximately three to four weeks before your party to give everyone time to make plans to attend. If you’re running short of time sending electronic invitations is a great idea too. You can ad animation and sound to e-invitations and even check guest’s responses online. Be sure to contact anyone who doesn’t respond via telephone since not everyone checks their email often.
Everyone will expect to see your house decorated to the nines on Halloween so be sure not to disappoint. Your decorations should match your theme, so give them plenty of thought. For instance, a haunted house theme should be complete with low lighting, smoke, a spooky soundtrack, and even live ghouls to jump out and scare the guests as they arrive. A horror movie bash might include retro horror B-movie posters stuck on the walls which you can find on the Internet and print off at home.
Decorations can be found just about anywhere in the months leading up to Halloween. Even grocery stores carry a wide selection. Start shopping early so you can get the best selection possible and take advantage of any sales. If you can’t find just what you’re looking for you can always rent decorations from a local party supply shop or even purchase decorations from the Internet. The Internet has an almost endless selection and you can find just about any party supplies or decorations you’ll need.
Music is an important aspect of any party as well. While some spooky tunes are fun at first, you’ll want to switch over to some more upbeat music once the party gets going. People love to dance so have plenty of high energy songs ready to go. If you are inviting a variety of different people have several different types of music so no ones gets bored.
Tasty Halloween Treats
Food is an important part of any party. While you don’t need to provide a full meal, some creative and tasty snacks and treats will help keep your guests fueled for the night’s festivities. Turning simple party food into ghoulish culinary delights will surprise and please your guests. Try making some bewitching cupcakes, and put out snacks such as gummy worms and other Halloween candy treats.
Costumes are a given, since this is Halloween after all. If you are having a Halloween theme of some sort, let your guests know on your invitations that they should dress to fit the theme. For instance, if you’re throwing a horror movie bash, you can simply say, “come as your favorite horror movie starâ€. Don’t expect all your guests to comply with your request. Some people have been thinking up their Halloween costume since last year!
Don’t forget about the party favors! Depending on how many people you’re inviting and how much you’re willing to spend, the possibilities are endless when it comes to party favors. A simple idea is candy bags full of traditional treats such as candy corn. Something more substantial might be a pumpkin carving kit that comes with cutouts and tools. Your guests will love having a little something to take home with them.
Endless Costume Possibilities
If you really aren’t into the scary aspect of Halloween, you can always break with tradition and hold a different type of Halloween party. Have a famous couples party or a crazy hat party instead. Guests can still dress up but might be more creative then a white sheet with holes cut out of it. Dressing up for Halloween is something that both adults and kids can enjoy so great creative and have fun with it!
Having games at your party isn’t a necessity, but can be a great deal of fun for your guests. Games act as an excellent icebreaker if everyone doesn’t know each other. Any games where you can break people off into teams will help to get everyone talking. Pumpkin carving contests are a good idea, as is bobbing for apples. Be sure to give a prize to the best costume as well.
Your Halloween party is sure to be a success if you take the time to plan. Leave yourself plenty of time and don’t forget it’s all the little details that help to make a fabulous party. Enlist the help of family and friends if you’re feeling overwhelmed, and remember, planning is half the fun!
During Mardi Gras costumes are usually only worn by people in parades or when going to parties. However on Fat Tuesday everyone is encouraged to wear a costume or mask. Most banks in New Orleans are closed and if you do visit a security conscious area expect them to ask you to remove your mask. While many people wear rented costumes the most sought after costumes are the unique and individual hand made one. Much like royalty no one wants to be seen in the same costume twice.Photo by Caitlinator
The origins of the Christmas tree lie in ancient times however a more modern history of the Christmas tree comes from Germany in the 17th century. German families cut the tops off of evergreen trees and placed them upside down in their houses where they were decorated with apples, nuts, and red ribbon or paper. German immigrants to the United States are also said to have brought some of these traditions from their homeland. They built wooden pyramids and decorated them with evergreen branches. The first full tress didn’t appear until the early 1800’s.
IN 1834 Queen Victoria of England married Prince Albert of Germany, and later that year the first Christmas Tree made an appearance at Windsor Castle. This tradition became more popular and spread to the United States in the 1840’s. In the 1850’s an enterprising farmer chopped down some evergreen trees and drove two ox carts to New York City and set up the first Christmas Tree lot to sell trees. In 1856 the first Christmas tree was introduced to the White House by Franklin Pierce.

The idea of Father’s Day was first proposed in 1909 by Mrs. Sonora Dodd, as a way to honor her father William Smart. Mrs. Smart was a civil war veteran who was widowed with six children. When Mr. Dodd became she realized the sacrifices that were made by her father and wanted a way to honor him. On June 19, 1910 Sonora held the first Father’s Day celebration in Washington State. She chose the month of June, as it was the month her father was born in. This celebration spread to other towns and cities across the United States. In 1924 Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. In 1956 Congress recognized fathers day. In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson recognized Father’s Day and finally in 1972 President Nixon signed it into law. Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Today, Father’s Day is celebrated to honor all men who are fathers or father figures, including fathers, stepfathers, uncles, and grandfathers.
